Tresk-Takuhn heard the status updates of the others and took a deep breath. It was over. Slowly, the commander let his gaze wander over the immediate vicinity of the secondary power plant. The area had become a field of corpses. Corpses and destruction everywhere. There were no prisoners. Did the Naats believe in an afterlife?

“Understood,” he replied over his helmet radio. With the best will in the world, he couldn’t think of anything else to say.

Hisab-Benkh stepped up beside him. Black marks adorned the archaeologist’s battlesuit. “Good job.”

Tresk-Takuhn waved it off. It was about time, he thought grimly and looked up at the sky. Beyond the protective force field, Arkon’s convoy still hovered. The battle was won, but not the war. The future was still malleable.

“And now what?” It was Reban-Terkh. The young officer had taken Tresk-Takuhn by surprise. At first, the commander had barely seen him, but by the end of the battle, he had appeared at Hisab-Benkh’s side, fighting like there was no tomorrow.

Tresk-Takuhn looked at his aide-de-camp. He seemed to have changed. “Now we’re going back, soldier,” he said patiently, nodding towards the armored troop carrier that had brought them there. “The fortress needs us.”

That seemed to be enough for the boy. As if he had received an order, he turned on his heel and marched off. Tresk-Takuhn and Hisab-Benkh exchanged a quick glance, then followed him.
